Stuxnet Report

Posted October 29th, 2011 in web by Michael

When I recently stumbled across the (already old) Stuxnet article on Wired I was just amazed. This article describes how the Stuxnet worm was discovered and disassembled, the target it tried to attack and it shows how advanced this work is. The article reads like a novel from Dan Brown and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the latest news about the cyberwar….

Human tasks switches

Posted October 7th, 2011 in development by Michael

…have you ever noticed that you can assign one job to one person, and they’ll do a great job, but if you assign two jobs to that person, they won’t really get anything done? They’ll either do one job well and neglect the other, or they’ll do both jobs so slowly you feel like slugs have more zip. That’s because programming tasks take so long to task switch.

Yeah, that’s how it is. An old posting but still true – programmers are less productive if they have to constantly switch between tasks that are all super-mega-important for management. In fact each developer should only worry about the task at hand right now and leave it up to the project manager to decide upon the next task.

Apple seems to have “lost” another iPhone prototype in a bar… now they want it back – they even produced an advertisement… ;)

Explore. Dream. Discover.

Life is short, break the rules,
forgive quickly, kiss slowly,
love truly, laugh uncontrollably,
and never regret anything that made you smile.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did.
So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails.

Fish don’t know they’re in water

Posted August 2nd, 2011 in misc by Michael

Fish don’t know they’re in water.
If you tried to explain it, they’d say, “Water? What’s water?”
They’re so surrounded by it, that it’s impossible to see.
They can’t see it until they get outside of it.

Most times we are in water too – we just don’t see what is outside…. be it a different culture, different company or just a different opinion… so make sure to notice that you are in water!

Farming vs. Mining

Posted April 6th, 2011 in development by Michael

In the mining model of software companies, the charismatic, flighty founders and their investors stand to make a lot of money. Their workers, their customers, and their secondary investors all get boned, because these companies and their products tend to suck.

So true…

The people who really change the world are farmers.

Unfortunately mining seems to be very popular these days….

IE6 Countdown

Posted March 7th, 2011 in web by Michael

Finally even Microsoft started working on phasing out Internet Explorer 6. They are pretty serious to drop the worldwide usage below 1%:

10 years ago a browser was born.
Its name was Internet Explorer 6.
Now that we’re in 2011, in an era of modern web standards, it’s time to say goodbye.

I love that initiative and hope the number drops pretty fast from 12% right now to 1%… would save us Web developers so much hassles… So go and upgrade or and check out http://www.ie6countdown.com/.
